The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is a highly sought-after national-level entrance examination conducted annually by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore and seven IITs on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education (MoE), Government of India. It serves as a crucial gateway to:

  • Master’s Degree Programs (ME/M.Tech/MS): Gaining admission to prestigious postgraduate engineering programs in over 800+ institutions across India, including IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and state universities.
  • Doctoral Programs (Ph.D.): Directly entering Ph.D. programs in engineering and science at several institutions, subject to their eligibility criteria.
  • Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs): Qualifying for recruitment opportunities in many PSUs that utilize GATE scores for their selection processes.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nationality: Indian citizen, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholder, or Person of Indian Origin (PIO) cardholder.
  • Educational Qualification:
    • Completed or currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Technology/Architecture or equivalent.
    • Completed or currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Science in a relevant field of study with Mathematics as a compulsory subject in Bachelor’s degree.
    • Final year students can appear in the last year of their course, but admission will be granted only if they successfully complete their degree.

Exam Pattern:

  • Computer-Based Test (CBT): Held online in February each year.
  • Duration: 3 hours for Paper 1 and Paper 2.
  • Question Types: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and Numerical Answer Type (NAT) questions.
  • Marking Scheme: Each MCQ carries 1 mark; each NAT question carries 2 marks.
  • Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark deduction for incorrect MCQs; no negative marking for NAT questions.
  • Subjects: Varies depending on your chosen Paper (29 options available).
  • Papers:
    • Paper 1: Compulsory for all candidates, testing General Aptitude (Verbal Ability, Analytical Skills, and Numerical Ability) and Engineering Mathematics.
    • Paper 2: Subject-specific, focusing on core and applied engineering concepts.
